'Jersey Shore' and the dark side of influence

July 13, 2018 Nate Elliott
Picture of the cast of MTV reality show The Jersey Shore, for which we apologize.

This week's edition of NPR podcast 'Hidden Brain' takes on the flip side of influencer marketing by recounting one of my favorite stories: In 2011, Abercrombie and Fitch offered Jersey Shore star 'The Situation' $10,000 to not wear its clothes. To quote University of Pennsylvania professor Jonah Berger, "It turns out influence is very much like a magnet: we often think about it attracting... but it just as well repels us." And Abercrombie found The Situation repellent.

Don't worry: Snooki makes an appearance as well, plus Livestrong wristbands, fake horse heads, Lady Gaga's meat dress, and lots of fascinating science. Give it a listen.
